Salehurst Road II
Residential extension, London
Ongoing
A second project for a side return and extension in South London, designed as part of a holistic proposal which included extending the neighbouring property (Salehurst Road I). The brief in this instance was to list the extension to the side passage with a slightly more generous projection beyond the rear wall, rather than extend across the full width of the house.
In the interest of construction efficiency the extension shares building elements - drainage and the spine wall - with its neighbour, and also material palette, essentially viewing both projects as an extension to the terrace rather than the individual house. As such, the predominant material is the red waterstruck brick of Salehurst I, punctuated by a generous oak-framed window with a timber-lined window seat internally that provides a view to the garden from the front reception room. A tile clad mono-pitch roof with roof lights is set back from the rear elevation to allow the parapet datum established next door to continue. The internal layout allows for reuse of the existing kitchen units, paired with simple, economic finishes - bare plaster, brick and oak flooring. Planning Consent was granted in Summer 2020. |
