Renovation of a small apartment in Brixton to open up a series of small, separate rooms with poor natural light and suspended ceilings and create a more flexible space that takes full advantage of the generous floor to ceiling heights, revealing previously hidden decorative details, and generous windows. A low ceiling was stripped out of the hallway and a curved wall inserted to rationalise what was an irregular floorplan and enliven the entrance to the apartment. The partition between kitchen and living room has been removed to restore the front room to its original proportions and make it possible to re-open the fireplace and a new kitchen constructed in lacquered timber and iroko. The second bedroom has, like at Dunstans Road, been opened up using an insulated set of folding doors which can be used as a dining area or closed off for guests. The irregular floorboards throughout were white-washed to provide a coherent finish with white-washed walls contrasting with warm, natural, joinery. Photography by Rob Parrish |
