Garden Studio
New build studio & garden design, South London
Hurley + Hughes Architects
2016
Reconfiguration of a narrow back garden to create a small two person studio space and a new courtyard garden. Accommodation is set into the ground, taking advantage of the existing fall to the site, in order to minimise the impact on neighbouring gardens. The building is conceived as a sinuous screen that wraps around the south west corner of the plot enclosing the external courtyard and forming a direct relationship with the house. The courtyard itself is arranged around an existing Japanese Maple with a planter running along the western boundary and a channel of water reflecting a saw-tooth wall along the eastern boundary. A new hearth and chimney set halfway along the eastern boundary frame the courtyard and reinforce the sense of enclosure.
