Reworking of a small, ground floor, split-level, apartment in East Dulwich to create a more useable, flexible space, with new interventions that complement the existing Victorian fabric of the building.
The original layout had two bedrooms at the upper level, and a small, awkward, north-facing reception room at the lower level which suffered from poor light and low ceilings. This was resolved by flipping the plan to create a new dual aspect kitchen and living room, connected by large a timber-lined opening, that benefited from generous ceiling heights, an elevated position on the sloping site, original plaster details, and the re-opened fireplace. A new connection to the garden was made from the upper level. Partitions at the lower level were removed to allow light to penetrate into the deeper into the plan creating a more flexible space with one separate master bedroom and a folding plywood wall between corridor and second bedroom which can be retracted to create a generous study with a cantilevered timber desk. A space efficient bathroom is enclosed by a partition which curves around the end of the bath, removing the need for a shower screen. A common language of bare timber including stripped back original sash windows, floorboards, architraves and door linings create a consistency across the two levels. |
