Pavilion and community building, South London

Study for a replacement pavilion and community building on Metropolitan Open Land in south London. The proposal broadly follows the envelope of the existing building - which is approximately 440 sqm, of masonry construction, single storey with a dual pitched corrugated roof - and has been designed to provide 4 changing rooms with self-contained WC and showers, kitchen, bar, and 100 person capacity hall.
The existing building has been extended over its life span and is now arranged in an L-Shape with a section at the south western corner having become structurally unstable due to the ground conditions. Services are grouped along the northern flank of the building including bar, kitchen, WCs, and showers. In the interest of construction efficiency and to minimise cost, locations of the main service connections are retained with the kitchen remaining in its current position and the bar moved to adjoin it. Public toilets are consolidated leaving the majority of the space as open plan, flexible event space opening out to the south with views towards the upper pitch. The north east corner has been cut back to form a small terrace which would function as the primary entrance for the visiting public and provide a place for people to watch the lower pitch. The changing facilities form a wing along the western edge of the plot. They are designed to be independent from the hall; able to be closed off and unheated for parts of the year when they are not required but the rest of the building functions as an events venue, and are prefabricated to reduce the amount of time that temporary facilities are required. Lightweight modular construction also mitigates the issue of poor ground conditions across that section of the site as slender screw piles can be set out around existing roots of mature trees. |
