Extension of a detached bungalow overlooking the English Channel on the East Sussex coastline. The lightweight addition will provide a generous new living space to the small house, raised off the ground on timber stilts and orientated to maximise views out to sea. Working with a modest budget, the design is deliberately low-tech with an exposed timber frame housing fixed glazing, sandwiched between the existing external wall and a new lime-rendered, gable wall, galvanised rainwater goods and exposed chimney flue.
Historically, the house was entered from what’s now the back, a result of the original access road having fallen into the sea, and so the extension creates a new entrance which will be separated from the main living space by a full height curtain. The interior is left sparse with basic finishes - timber floor boards, lime plaster, acoustic board and bare timber.
